Though these two types of fireplaces sound very familiar, a gas fireplace and a gas log set are two different installations. In most cases, a gas log set simply installs a gas log into an existing wood burning fireplace, providing easier operation and maintenance.

By comparison, a gas fireplace can take on a wide range of appearances. It can have a very modern look with a gas burner combined with a range of different materials, such as glass, lava rock, and similar details. This type of fireplace often has a much more modern appearance.

In either situation, you will have a fireplace that is much easier to operate, much cleaner, and much lower maintenance than a wood burning fireplace.

Though most people would notice that the main difference between gas and wood burning fireplaces is the type of fuel, there are several other differences that can be difficult to pick out if you’re not familiar with these types of systems. Here’s a quick look at how they differ:

  • Gas fireplaces are low maintenance. Because gas fireplaces do not create ash or smoke, they are much easier to keep clean. You do not have the mess of firewood, including moisture, bark, ash, and soot to stay on top of.
  • Gas fireplaces are more efficient. Gas fireplaces are designed to operate much more efficiently than wood burning fireplaces are. They are able to be turned on and off with the push of a button or click on the finger, and require very little planning to be operational.
  • Gas fireplaces feature additional safety measures. Many gas fireplaces include flame detectors which will cut off the flow of gas if a flame is not detected. This helps reduce the risk of an unintentional fire in your home or business.
  • Gas fireplaces can be hooked to a thermostat. Because gas fireplaces are able to be tied to your thermostat, they can be more exactly controlled, reducing excess fuel usage. This capability also allows them to be turned on and off automatically.
  • Gas fireplaces have a very different appearance. Unlike traditional fireplaces which will always feature a log burning at the center of its appearance, gas fireplaces use a burner system. This allows you to incorporate a range of stone or hard material for a more modern appearance.

If you are considering having a gas fireplace installed in your New Braunfels, Austin, or San Antonio home or business, the experienced team at Wolfman has you covered. Why not take a few moments to book with us today so that you’ll get a safe, reliable fireplace system that you can count on for many years to come?

Because gas fireplaces are more commonly seen in luxury structures, it creates the impression that they are expensive to own and operate. However, gas fireplaces are often less expensive to own and operate compared to wood burning models.

Gas fireplaces are able to be turned on and off with the flick of a switch. This means less fuel is expended getting a fire started or stopped. Similarly, you don’t have to worry about losing heat up a chimney, because in many situations, these types of fireplaces can be ventless or vented through a wall. Here are a few more advantages of having a gas fireplace in your home or business:

The Top Advantages of Gas Fireplaces

  • Predictable fuel costs
  • Enhanced safety measures
  • More modern appearance
  • Thermostat control
  • Low maintenance
  • Placement flexibility
  • And much more!

By having a gas fireplace installed in your home or business, you gain an additional appliance for heating your home. If you need help with the process, our friendly team of experienced chimney professionals is always happy to chat. Why not give us a call or reach out today  to get started?

Though you can have a gas fireplace installed at any time during the year, most chimney service companies are very busy in the fall of the year, given the demand for chimney inspections, cleanings, maintenance, and repairs. This means that other times of the year will often provide you with faster service.

However, if you’re having an issue with your existing gas fireplace, it’s important to have repairs undertaken as soon as possible. Do not operate your gas fireplace if it is not operating properly, as it can cause a range of issues such as carbon monoxide poisoning, uncontained fires, and similar issues.

Gas fireplaces often have a range of additional safety measures in place to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. However, if your gas fireplace has not been maintained recently or inspected, there is a chance that it could be incompletely burning the propane or natural gas that fuels it.

In this situation, your gas fireplace can produce carbon monoxide. Provided that any fumes are being properly vented to the outdoors, this should not be a concern, but any issues should certainly be addressed with your chimney professional as soon as possible.

However, we always encourage our customers to have both carbon monoxide and smoke detectors installed throughout their homes for businesses for safety reasons.

What is carbon monoxide?

You’ve probably heard of carbon monoxide, but you may not be familiar with what it is and what it can do. Because carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas, it is especially dangerous period it doesn’t have a scent or appearance the way that smoke does, which would make it easier to detect. Carbon monoxide is formed when fuels such as wood, natural gas, propane, and oil are burning incompletely.

Carbon monoxide can be dangerous, and sometimes even deadly, to humans. The symptoms that you may notice include:

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • confusion
  • weakness
  • blurred vision
  • shortness of breath
  • …and more

In serious cases, carbon monoxide can cause you to lose consciousness. At this point, you are unable to get out of the environment where the carbon monoxide is being produced. This means you will continue to breathe it in, which can lead to suffocation and death. This is why we highly recommend our clients have carbon monoxide detectors installed.

Prior to the purchase of your new home, an inspection of the fireplace and chimney system should have been performed. However, if it wasn’t, you’ll want to have an inspection done before to use the gas fireplace.

If you had a home inspection performed, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your gas fireplace is safe to use. Home inspectors check a wide range of issues when inspecting a home that is for sale. They are well equipped to do their job, but that doesn’t make them gas fireplace experts.

For this reason, we recommend that maintenance and an inspection be performed before a property is sold. If any issues should be discovered, they can be worked into the negotiated price or repaired prior to a move in date. Nobody wants to have to pay for repairs right after closing on a new home.

Have you already moved in and there was no professional inspection performed? If so, feel free to give our team of chimney experts a call so that you can schedule an inspection.

The cost of installing or repairing a gas fireplace will depend very much on the fireplace itself. Different sizes, different heat ratings, and different features will all impact the price. It will also impact on the cost after purchase, as any parts that will need to be replaced or repaired will be different between different models.

However, if your gas fireplace has been well maintained and regularly inspected, repairs are likely to be less expensive. This is because the system will have been well maintained, and fewer items are likely to fail at the same time.

But if you haven’t had the opportunity to invest in fireplace care, and the system has been neglected for years or decades, you are far more likely to have a high bill. This is because there will be a longer list of required services, replacement parts, and repairs that need to be performed before your gas fireplace will be back in operation again.
